WhatsApp Pay struggling to make an impact
Despite being out of 'testing' mode, WhatsApp Pay does not seem to be getting much traction.
In absolute terms the payments through the App have quadrupled since October when it came out of ‘testing’ mode. However, in absolute terms its scale is very small. At just under ₹0.5bn in April-2021, it had a share of just 0.01% amongst all UPI Apps.
PhonePe and Google Pay continue to dominate the UPI Apps ecosystem with 85% share of payments. PayTM comes a distant third with less than 10% market share. The entry of WhatsApp pay has, as yet, not had any impact. Clearly, there appears to be a lot of inertia in switching to a new app for making payments.
